Allied Arts of Greater Chattanooga held a graduation ceremony for the 5th Holmberg Arts Leadership Institute class on December 1, 2009 at the Bessie Smith Cultural Center. The arts leadership program was launched in 2005 in memory of long-time Allied Arts board member and arts advocate A. William Holmberg, Jr.

During the seven week institute the participants explored the Chattanooga arts scene and visited cultural institutions such as the Chattanooga Theatre Centre, Hunter Museum of American Art and the Creative Discovery Museum. The future arts leaders learned about board and non-profit management, arts education, cultural diversity, arts and economic development, public art, and the value of arts in the community. Featured speakers included Ruth Holmberg, Pete Cooper, Jack Murrah, Jim Kennedy, Ann Coulter, and Dr. Carolyn Thompson. The class also studied A Whole New Mind by Daniel Pink. The book examines the necessity of the arts to succeed in the 21st century.

At the graduation ceremony, the participants shared their observations, reflections and suggestions about the local arts community. The class was divided into five groups to share creative presentations focused on Allied Art’s five beliefs: the Arts are for everyone; the arts are integral to educating and inspiring all young people; the arts are vital to economic development; the arts reflect and shape the life of the community; and the arts require political and financial support.
