On February 25th, Allied Arts of Greater Chattanooga raises the curtain on its 2010 Annual Campaign with “The Arts are for All,” a celebration like no other. In one day, ballet dancers, visual artists, musicians and local authors will teach, create and perform all over Chattanooga for school children, people with special needs, senior citizens and adult learners at more than 18 different venues from Signal Mountain to Ooltewah. “Much of what we do at Allied Arts is behind the scenes – providing grants and funding that help bring the arts into the community. On February 25th, we want to give Chattanooga a peak at the magic that occurs as a result of the arts that happen here every day - in our classrooms, senior centers, and social service agencies,” said Dan Bowers, president of Allied Arts.
Then at 5 p.m., Mr. Bowers and Allied Arts’ 2010 Annual Campaign Chair Patti Frierson will officially launch the campaign during an event at the Chattanooga Theatre Centre. Members of the community will gather for refreshments and share the day’s highlights in a montage of video and photographs captured throughout the day. “Our Cultural Partners will provide a moving canvas to illustrate how the arts touch this community in unexpected ways all year, city-and county-wide,” Bowers said. The agency’s Cultural Partners are the fourteen arts organizations that receive operational funding from Allied Arts.
Allied Arts will work to raise $2 million during the four-month campaign by reaching out to thousands of individuals and businesses in Chattanooga for their support. The money raised will fund Allied Arts’ initiatives and grants, and provide a major contribution towards the operating budgets of its Cultural Partners.
“The arts touch us all – they connect us in ways that make our quality of life better, and they improve the academic success of our children,” said Patti Frierson. “This year, we hope to inspire many to give to Allied Arts, perhaps for the first time. With everyone's help, we can continue the work we do that contributes to a thriving economy and makes Chattanooga an even more wonderful place to live,” she said.
Allied Arts was started in 1969 as the Allied Arts Fund, a united campaign that raised $250,000 in its first year for seven major arts groups serving Chattanooga at the time. After merging with Chattanooga Arts Council to become Allied Arts of Greater Chattanooga, Inc., it went on to generate more than $10 million in endowment from 1981 to 1984.
Since then, Allied Arts has helped shape the arts in Chattanooga by growing its cultural partner membership, creating and funding the city-and county-wide arts education program, developing and managing a spectrum of arts grants programs, initiating a model arts leadership program, implementing a strategic planning process and marketing effort for the arts, acting as a major fundraising resource and serving as an arts advocate.
Today Allied Arts is the recognized local arts council and arts funding agency. In the past forty years, it has raised more than $50 million on behalf of the arts in Chattanooga, with a goal to raise $2 million each year. Funding comes from individuals, foundations, corporations, city and county governments, the Tennessee Arts Commission, and the National Endowment for the Arts.
Members of the Allied Arts Board of Directors, its Cultural Partners, graduates of the Holmberg Arts Leadership Institute, and the city’s many arts advocates are working together to communicate with contributors who are willing to give what they can to strengthen the foundation of the Arts.
A series of 40 billboards city- and county-wide carry the Allied Arts message “The Arts are for All,” including a Latino version. The billboards contain a simple message to the people of Chattanooga asking them to “Give One and All” during this campaign. Among other marketing efforts, Allied Arts is launching a social media campaign on Facebook to share the story of the arts in Chattanooga, post news of the city’s arts “happenings,” encourage support for the Arts, and create excitement with promotions and opportunities to win tickets to Arts events throughout the year.
