The Nightfall Concert Series begins its 23rd season of great summer musical programming for 16 weeks, starting Friday, May 28, with a headline show by Big Sam’s Funky Nation. The opening act is The Micks. These FREE shows are held each Friday on the BlueCross Stage at Miller Plaza, from May 28 through September 24.
Presented by the River City Company, and produced by Chattanooga Presents, Nightfall continues to bring an eclectic mix of rock, blues, jazz, world music, funk, bluegrass and folk music to Downtown Chattanooga. Nightfall will keep its commitment to the local arts community by featuring Chattanooga musicians for each opening act, beginning at 7 PM, followed by performances by national and international talent beginning at 8 PM. Beer, wine, food and non-alcoholic drink concessions are available on site. No outside food or beverages are allowed.
For the past several years, Big Sam has been a driving force of urban funk. The band is led by trombone powerhouse Big Sam Williams, formerly of the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, who the San Francisco Chronicle calls “the top man on the slide trombone in the birthplace of jazz.” The distinct honor of Best Funk Group of 2008 was awarded to Big Sam’s Funk Nation at the 2009 Big Easy Music Awards.

In-Town Gallery’s Featured Artist for August is Paul Fontana
"Horizons" is the theme chosen by Paul Fontana, featured artist at In-Town Gallery during the month of August. The exhibit consists of, in Paul’s words, “variations of that ever-changing place where earth meets sky.” Visitors will be treated to impressionistic and abstract depictions of horizons using bold colors and texture-rich acrylics on canvas. The artist invites the public to an opening reception on the First Friday, August 6, from 5:00 - 8:00 pm at the gallery.
Born in New York City, Paul spent his early adult life in south Florida before becoming a 30-plus year resident of Cohutta, GA. Though not necessarily inspired by forests, Paul’s home studio has an almost 360º view of the woods. Retired from teaching in Dalton Public Schools, Paul now devotes almost every day to painting. What began as a pastime meant to please only himself has slowly grown into a defining aspect of his life. Initially “dabbling in reality,” as he calls it, Paul, encouraged by fellow artists and friends Bradley and Mandy Wilson, eventually entered the world of a freer expression of color and form.
A lifelong photographer, who gained much of his experience from working in shipboard photo labs in the U.S. Naval Air, Paul has always been seduced by the bold use of color. With no formal training in art, he feels he is able to use his “camera eye” to express himself in paint. He has been exhibiting with other regional studio professionals at the In-Town Gallery for the past year and a half and is building a following in the north Georgia/Chattanooga area.
In-Town Gallery is located at 26A Frazier Avenue in the North Shore area of Chattanooga between the Market and Walnut Street bridges adjacent to Coolidge Park. It is one of the oldest cooperative galleries in the nation and offers a variety of services including gift certificates, bridal and gift registries, and layaway. The gallery is open 11:00 am to 6:00 pm Monday through Saturday, from 1:00 to 5:00 on Sundays, and until 8:00 pm on most First Fridays. Call 423-267-9214 for more information, or visit the website, www.intowngallery.com or www.facebook.com/intowngallery. For an introduction to Paul’s work, go to www.facebook.com/galleriafontana. -

Name of event: The Book of Liz by The Talent Family: David Sedaris and Amy Sedaris
More information about the production: Sister Elizabeth Donderstock is Squeamish, has been her whole life. She makes cheese balls that sustain the existence of her entire religious community, Clusterhaven. Feeling unappreciated, she tries her luck in the outside world. Along the way, she meets an immigrant couple who find her a job waiting tables at Plymouth Crock, a family restaurant run almost entirely by recovering alcoholics. The alcoholics love her. The customers love her. Her Danderfrock fits right in. Things are going great for Liz, until she’s offered a promotion to manager. Liz has a sweating problem, and to get the job, she’ll have to fix it. Back at Clusterhaven, Liz’s compatriots can’t seem to duplicate her cheese ball recipe, and it’s going to cost them their quaint, cloistered lifestyle. Panic-stricken and desperate, they’re sure she sabotaged the recipe. Can the Squeamish be saved? Will the cheese balls ever taste good again? The answers to these questions can be found in the new comedy from the Talent Family, David and Amy Sedaris. Directed by Lebron Benton.
