That Evening Sun
March 5 - 11
Directed by Scott Teems
Abner Meecham (Hal Holbrook), an aging Tennessee farmer discarded to a nursing facility by his lawyer son, flees the old folks' home and catches a ride back to his country farm to live out his days in peace. Upon his return, he discovers that his son has leased the farm to Abner's old enemy and his white trash family. Not one to suffer fools or go down easy, Abner moves into the old tenant shack on the property and declares that he won't leave until the farm is returned to his possession. But Lonzo Choat, the new tenant, has no intention to move out or give in to the old man's demands. This sets up a ruthless grudge match between Abner and Choat, each man right in his own eyes, each too stubborn to give an inch. Angered by his son's betrayal, and haunted by recurring dreams of his long‐dead wife, Abner sets about his own path toward reclaiming his life. Lines are drawn, threats are made, and the simmering tension under the Southern sun erupts, inevitably, into savagery. Nominated for two Independent Spirit Awards, this movie was filmed in Knoxville.

Multicultural Lit Book Club Discusses Stones into Schools
The Multicultural Literature Book Club features books written by ethnic-American authors and works in translation as decided by the participants. This book club is for all those who enjoy exploring a diversity of cultures through reading and discussion.
In March, the MLBC will discuss Stones into Schools: Promoting Peace with Books, Not Bombs, in Afghanistan and Pakistan by Greg Mortenson.
In this dramatic first-person narrative, Greg Mortenson picks up where Three Cups of Tea left off in 2003, recounting his relentless, ongoing efforts to establish schools for girls in Afghanistan; his extensive work in Azad Kashmir and Pakistan after a massive earthquake hit the region in 2005; and the unique ways he has built relationships with Islamic clerics, militia commanders, and tribal leaders even as he was dodging shootouts with feuding Afghan warlords and surviving an eight-day armed abduction by the Taliban. He shares for the first time his broader vision to promote peace through education and literacy, as well as touching on military matters, Islam, and women -- all woven together with the many rich personal stories of the people who have been involved in this remarkable two-decade humanitarian effort.
Each month's selected title is available at Rock Point Books to participating members at a discount of 10% off of the regular price.
The MLBC meets on the second Wednesday of each month. This book club is open to the public and free to join at any time. For more information about the club or to express your interest in joining, please contact Abbie Tilley at MulticulturalLit@att.net. -

The month of March will bring two new exhibits to The Arts Center in Athens, Tennessee. Both exhibits will open on March 4 and will showcase the work of area students in the visual arts. On display until March 26 is the HIGH SCHOOL ART STUDENT EXHIBIT with some of the best works from the art classes of local high schools. Through April 30, The Arts Center will also showcase the work of our own advanced painting students who have been taking classes at The Arts Center.
March is National Youth Art Month, and the Arts Center is honoring that distinction with its 4th annual High School Art Student Exhibit. There are three public high schools in McMinn County with a total of four teachers in the visual arts. They are Boni Kross at Athens Junior High School (9th grade only), Joyce Simpson at McMinn Central High School, and Sara Gaston and Patricia Compton at McMinn County High School. Several of the very best assigned art projects from each of the schools will be on display, demonstrating the talent and imagination of the students and their teachers.
The Arts Center has been offering classes in the visual and performing arts for children and adults since opening in 2005. A variety of media has been taught by an impressive array of instructors, including Sandy Brown (watercolors) and Chris Ingram (oils and acrylics). A number of their students have continued in their medium of choice to improve their skills. It is the work of these advanced painting students that will be showcased in the group exhibit. A sampling of the paintings that were either done in class or while taking a class will be on display to show the impact The Arts Center has had on their art. Landscapes, abstracts, portraits, and other subject matter will reveal the extent of their training, as some of the students had never picked up a paint brush before beginning classes here, while others enrolled to improve their skills and explore new directions.
The Arts Center invites you to view both these exhibits and be as amazed and proud as we are by the abundance of talent present in our community. The public is also invited to attend the opening reception on Wednesday, March 10, from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. The Arts Center instructors, the high school teachers, and many of the students will be on hand to talk about their experience and their art.
The Arts Center is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. till 5:00 p.m. Admission is free. For more information or directions, call (423) 745-8781 or visit our website at www.athensartscouncil.org. -
